SENATORS: INCREASE MEDICARE RATES FOR PROVIDERS
August 4
, 2006

In a letter to Senate Majority leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., and Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., 80 Senators called for an increase in Medicare reimbursement rates for doctors in 2007. Without the legislation, rates for providers will decrease some 5 percent Jan. 1, 2007. An AMA survey of providers in early 2006 indicated that if payment cuts begin in 2007, 45 percent of physicians plan to either stop accepting or decrease the number of new Medicare patients and 43 percent will either stop accepting or decrease the number of new Tricare patients.
